I. The four distinctively divine attributes
ascribed to the Holy Spirit:
ETERNITY
Hebrews 9:14 "...how much more will the blood of
Christ, Who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God,
cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?"
OMNIPRESENCE
Psalm 139:7-10 "Where can I go from Thy Spirit? Or
where can I flee from Thy presence? If I ascend to heaven, Thou art there; if I
make my bed in Sheol, behold, Thou art there. If I take the wings of the dawn,
if I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, even there Thy hand will lead me,
and Thy right hand will lay hold of me......"
OMNISCIENCE
1 Corinthians 2:10,11 "For to us God revealed them
through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.
For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man,
which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of
God.
John 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom
the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to
your remembrance all that I said to you."
John 16:12,13 "I have more things to say to you,
but you cannot bear them now. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will
guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on His own initiative, but
whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come."
OMNIPOTENCE
Luke 1:35 "And the angel answered and said to her,
'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you; and for that reason the Holy offspring shall be called the Son
of God.'"
II. The three distinctively divine works ascribed
to the Holy Spirit:
CREATION
Job 33:4 "The Spirit of God has made me, and the
breath (Spirit) of the Almighty gives me life.
Psalm 104:30 "Thou dost send forth Thy Spirit,
they are created; and Thou dost renew the face of the ground."
Genesis 1:1-3 "In the beginning God created the
heavens and the earth. And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was
over the surface of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface
of the waters. Then God said, 'Let there be light'; and there was light."
IMPARTATION OF LIFE
John 6:63 "It is the Spirit who gives life; the
flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are
life."
Romans 8:11 "But if the Spirit of Him who raised
Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead
will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who indwells you."
Genesis 2:7 "Then the Lord formed man of dust from
the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath (Spirit) of life; and man
became a living being."
AUTHORSHIP OF DIVINE PROPHECIES
2 Peter 1:21 "...for no prophecy was ever made by
an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God."
2 Samuel 23:2,3 "The Spirit of the Lord spoke by
me, and His word was on my tongue. The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel
spoke to me, He who rules over men righteously, Who rules in the fear of God,
......."
III. Old Testament statements which distinctly
name the Lord or Jehovah as their subject are applied to the Holy Spirit in the
New Testament.
Isaiah 6:8-10 "Then I heard the voice of the Lord,
saying, 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?' Then I said, 'Here am I,
send me!' And He said, 'Go, and tell this people: keep on listening, but do not
perceive; Render the hearts of this people insensitive, their ears dull, and
their eyes dim, lest they see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand
with their hearts, and return and be healed."
Acts 28:25-27 "And when they did not agree with
one another, they began leaving after Paul had spoken one parting word, 'The
Holy Spirit rightly spoke through Isaiah the prophet to your fathers, saying,
"Go to this people and say, 'You will keep on hearing, but will not understand;
and you will keep on seeing, but will not perceive; for the heart of this
people has become dull, and with their ears they scarcely hear, and they have
closed their eyes; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their
ears, and understand with their heart and return, and I should heal them.'"'"
John 12:39-41 "For this cause they could not
believe, for Isaiah said again, 'He has blinded their eyes, and He hardened
their heart; lest they see with their eyes, and perceive with their heart, and
be converted, and I heal them.' These things Isaiah said, because he saw His
glory, and he spoke of Him."
Isaiah 6:3 "And one called out to another and
said, 'Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, the whole earth is full of His
glory.'"
The Trinity is inferred by the triple "Holy" in
this verse. Each "Holy" is for one of the three persons of the
Godhead.
Exodus 16:7 "......and in the morning you will see
the glory of the Lord, for He hears your grumblings against the Lord; and what
are we, that you grumble against us?"
Psalm 95:8-11 "Do hot harden your hearts, as at
Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the wilderness; when your fathers tested
Me, they tried Me, though they had seen My work. For forty years I loathed that
generation, and said they are a people who err in their heart, and they do not
know My ways. Therefore I swore in My anger, truly they shall not enter into My
rest."
Hebrews 3:7-9 "Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit
says, 'Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as when they
provoked Me, as in the day of trial in the wilderness.'"
IV. The name of the Holy Spirit is coupled with
that of God in a manner that could only indicate deity:
1 Corinthians 12:4-6 "Now there are varieties of
gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same
Lord. And there are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things
in all persons."
2 Corinthians 13:14 "The grace of the Lord Jesus
Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you
all."
The Holy Spirit is called God:
Acts 5:3,4 "But Peter said, 'Ananias, why has
Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back some of the
price of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And
after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have
conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.'"
The Holy Spirit's individual personhood as seen
in distinction from the Father and the Son:
Luke 3:21,22 "Now it came about when all the
people were baptized, that Jesus also was baptized, and while He was praying,
heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a
dove, and a voice came out of heaven, 'Thou art My beloved Son, in Thee I am
well-pleased.'"
Matthew 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of
all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the
Holy Spirit."
John 14:16 "And I will ask the Father, and He will
give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever;...."
John 16:7 "But I tell you the truth, it is to your
advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper shall not come to
you; but if I go, I will send Him to you."
Acts 2:33 "Therefore (Jesus) having been exalted
to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of
the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear."
The Bible clearly draws a distinction between the three Persons,
the Holy Spirit, the Father, and the Son. |
